(de-news.net) – Following the dissolution of the current governing coalition, a timetable for new federal elections in Germany has been established. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has endorsed the election schedule jointly agreed upon by the minority government and the Union parties. He welcomes the parliamentary factions’ consensus regarding the vote of confidence in the Bundestag scheduled for December 16th. Steinmeier emphasized that, should a vote of no confidence pass against Chancellor Olaf Scholz, he will promptly determine the dissolution of parliament after consultations with party leaders. He has labeled February 23, 2025, as a realistic date for the new elections and urges responsible cooperation between the factions during the intervening period.
As concurred upon by the CDU-CSU, SPD, as well as the Green party, the new Bundestag election is to be held on February 23, 2025. Green party leader Britta Haßelmann underscored the significance of conducting these elections with both legal security and fairness. Important legislative projects, including the reinforcement of the Federal Constitutional Court and the establishment of the ‘Deutschlandticket,’ are slated for passage in the coming weeks.
The Chancellor had initially proposed a new election date to be scheduled for the end of March, while the Union parties advocated for an earlier date in January. The impetus for these new elections stems from the end of the governing coalition comprised of the SPD, Greens, and FDP. Federal Election Commissioner Ruth Brand has emphasized the necessity of meticulous election organization and deems a date in February to be practicable.
