(de-news.net) – Johann Wadephul, the deputy chairman of the Union parliamentary group, has urged the SPD and Greens to support the CDU/CSU five-point proposal on migration and internal security. He emphasized the need to address migration issues democratically to prevent the AfD from benefiting from government inaction. Wadephul criticized the SPD and Greens for hiding behind superficial discussions and stressed the importance of demonstrating a genuine policy shift in migration to gain voter trust.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) criticized CDU candidate Friedrich Merz’s five-point plan, which included permanent border closures and rejections, as doomed to fail. Scholz argued that national posturing would not solve irregular migration, advocating instead for better protection of EU external borders and intra-EU cooperation. He stated that Merz’s proposals contradicted the German constitution and European treaties, and that his rival’s positioning lacked statesmanship.
The FDP welcomed the Union’s migration plans but deemed them insufficient. FDP leader Christian Dürr called for withholding development aid from countries that refuse to repatriate their citizens, citing Afghanistan as an example. Dürr highlighted the need for agreements ensuring no aid flows to non-compliant countries and expressed a desire to discuss this with the CDU/CSU.
To prevent violence in Germany, the Union has put forward an additional proposal for enhanced cooperation between security agencies and psychiatric institutions. According to a report, the Union’s draft included measures for better collaboration to protect against violent offenders, introducing a new category for mentally ill threats while promising to avoid stigmatizing the group of mentally ill globally, safeguarding them.
