Commemoration for the victims of Hanau (Update)

(de-news.net) – Five years after the racist attack in Hanau, a memorial service is held in honor of the nine victims, attended by the relatives of those murdered, President Steinmeier, and the Minister President of Hesse, Rhein. Wreath-laying ceremonies will be organized at the gravesites in Germany, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey.

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier advocated resolute action against all forms of xenophobia. He emphasized that it is the duty of the people “to ensure harmonious coexistence, every day and time and again.” The incident five years ago was an attack on open society and liberal democracy. “Let us oppose whenever individuals are reduced to their origin, religion, or skin color. Let us stand with those who are viewed with disdain, insulted, or threatened.” This, and this remains the message from Hanau: “We stand together. We hold together. We want to live together.”

In recognition of the anniversary, Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for action against racist hatred, emphasizing that every individual can contribute to greater humanity in daily life. The Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, Ferda Ataman, urged the incoming government to adopt a national plan against discrimination and racism.

On February 19, 2020, a 43-year-old man killed nine individuals with migrant backgrounds in Hanau, as well as his mother and himself. Prior to the attack, he had made racist statements online. In late December 2021, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office concluded its investigation into the attack, stating that there was no evidence of accomplices, instigators, aides, or confidants of the perpetrator.
