Seehofer wants changes in the European asylum system

Federal Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) would like to talk about a reform of the European asylum system as part of the German Presidency of the EU Council, which is set to begin in July this year. Above all, Seehofer sees opportunities in the fact that it could, in future, already be checked at the EU’s external borders whether an applicant is entitled to asylum, instead of in destination countries. Seehofer also suggested strengthening the European border protection agency Frontex. Finally, he wished that states which do not accept refugees themselves should support the asylum system alternatively, as best they can.
