The interest group ‘Deutsche Umwelthilfe’ has spoken out in favor of the EU Commission striving for more ambitious goals within the Common Agricultural Policy (GAP). “With the Green Deal, the EU Commission has presented a comprehensive action program to get out of the current economic crisis by way of climate and environmental protection.” The Commission “must now be measured against this,” said Umwelthilfe Managing Director Müller-Kraenner. Renegotiations must be carried out so that the Commission does not jeopardize its climate and biodiversity goals. So far, two pillars have been agreed upon in the EU: direct payments to farmers as well as a sustainability and development funding program. The Umwelthilfe called for the EU Commission to withdraw its proposal for agricultural reform if no compromise can be reached.
