SPD assuming unity and cohesion as Pistorius clears path for Scholz

(de-news.net) – SPD Vice Chair Anke Rehlinger has asserted that her party is well-prepared for the upcoming election campaign. The statement follows extensive internal discussions regarding the candidacy for chancellor. Rehlinger expressed confidence in the party’s cohesion, emphasizing that there is a unanimous stance within the SPD against Friedrich Merz (CDU) to reach for the chancellorship. Rehlinger lauded the decision to nominate Olaf Scholz, underscoring his adept crisis management skills and extensive governmental experience. However, she critiqued the timing of the decision, suggesting that an earlier resolution would have been preferable.

SPD Bundestag Deputy Chair Wiese also called for party unity. Before the forthcoming campaign, the candidate selection process had not been optimal, he also deplored, however expressing relief that a final decision had been reached. The party’s strong resolve to challenge Merz will contribute to fostering greater unity among party members, he claimed.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) recently withdrew from the chancellor race, thereby clearing the path for Scholz. Pistorius reaffirmed his support for Scholz, citing his leadership through numerous crises and his pivotal role in strengthening Germany’s transatlantic position. Postorius’ decision to withdraw was seen by observers as an act of solidarity, encouraging SPD members to unite behind Scholz for a second term.

The SPD leadership intends to formally nominate Scholz on January 11, following a decision by the party board this coming Monday. CDU/CSU Deputy Chair Middelberg remarked that Scholz’s candidacy is more advantageous for the Union.
