(de-news.net) – The Union parties are determined to reverse the electoral reform introduced by the traffic light coalition. Deputy parliamentary group leader Johann Wadephul asserted that, in the event of an electoral victory, they would not endorse a coalition agreement without this stipulation. For the CDU and CSU, this constitutes a “conditio sine qua non,” which will be prominently featured in their election manifesto.
Under the current electoral legislation, not every constituency winner secures a seat in the Bundestag. Instead, only as many successful direct candidates from a party in a federal state are elected as are proportionate to their share of second votes. This reform aims to reduce the previously high number of MPs and cap it at 630. To achieve this reduction, Wadephul proposed fewer and larger constituencies as an alternative.
