(de-news.net) – Federal President Steinmeier has dissolved the Bundestag, thereby facilitating new elections on February 23, 2025. Steinmeier urged political parties to conduct a respectful, fair, and solution-oriented campaign, devoid of hate and violence. He underscored the significance of political stability in Germany, acknowledging that while early elections are exceptional, they are necessary in challenging times to ensure a functional government and reliable parliamentary majorities. Steinmeier also cautioned against external interference and encouraged voters to exercise their right to participate.
Following the confidence vote on December 16, Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz had requested the dissolution of parliament. Steinmeier had consulted with faction leaders and determined that new elections were the most appropriate course of action.
Bundestag President Bas reiterated the call for fair and respectful conduct during the campaign, emphasizing the importance of clearly presenting differing positions without resorting to insults. Chancellor Scholz lost the vote of confidence on December 16, following the coalition’s dissolution, with the aim of prompting early elections.
According to the Basic Law, Steinmeier had 21 days to decide on dissolving the parliament. Following his decision, a 60-day period commences for holding new elections. The Bundestag will continue to hold regular sessions in January and February, remaining capable of passing resolutions until the new Bundestag convenes, and the government will remain in office.
