Union parties halt security law deliberations, citing inadequate drafts

(de-news.net) – The CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag has annulled several deliberations on security legislation with the SPD and Green factions on Friday morning. Alexander Throm, the Union’s spokesperson for internal affairs, conveyed in an email to SPD’s Sebastian Hartmann that there was no foundation for discussions based on the drafts presented by the traffic light coalition. Throm underscored the necessity for a security package that genuinely merits its designation.

Hartmann had previously extended an invitation to the Union faction for these deliberations, citing three initiatives: the Bundestag Police Act, the Kritis-Dachgesetz for safeguarding critical infrastructures, and a statute to enhance counter-terrorism efforts. The latter had already been enacted by the traffic light coalition following the Solingen attack but was obstructed by Union-led states in the Bundesrat in October for being inadequate.

Throm proposed that the sole viable path for a security package was through the mediation committee, a measure only the federal government could undertake. He reproached the government for not taking this step despite recurrent affirmations from the Interior Minister and SPD faction regarding the expansion of security authorities’ competencies.

The SPD faction accused the Union of obstructing pivotal legislation, with Hartmann asserting that SPD and Greens depended on shifting majorities to enact crucial laws in the final phase of their administration. He accused FDP and Union of disregarding the current security situation and forging a pact to impede further security legislation. Hartmann noted that since November of the previous year, they had repeatedly endeavored to engage in discussions with both factions, but election campaigns and populist headlines took precedence.
