(de-news.net) – The two Union parties are considering a new reform of the recently amended electoral law. CDU leader Merz indicated that the topic would also be discussed in potential coalition negotiations with the SPD. He criticized the new law, pointing out that four cities are no longer represented by deputies in the parliament, and 23 directly elected candidates would not enter the Bundestag, with the CDU/CSU being particularly affected.
CSU leader Söder described the current electoral law as unfair and undemocratic. The new Bundestag is now comprising 630 members after the electoral reform. During the last legislative period, 733 members were in parliament due to overhang and compensation mandates. The electoral law was amended in 2023 with the support of the then traffic-light coaliation.
