Former Ministers call for comprehensive state reform to address future challenges

(de-news.net) – An initiative of Former Federal Minister Thomas de Maiziere (CDU), former Federal Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück (SPD) and supervisory board member Julia Jäkel have urged the incoming federal government to engage in comprehensively and swift state and administrative reform.

The signatories advocate for more efficient and citizen-oriented administrative regulation and state processes, emphasizing that without reform, key tasks such as new industrial policy, effective climate protection, rapid digitalization, modern education, and a functional social system would not be attainable. Inaction could weaken the state, they point out, a phenomenon already observed in other countries. The lead figures of Re:form, as the initiative is labeled, emphasize that the next federal government must prioritize change as a central project from the outset. The allocation of budgetary funds is to be linked to verifiable goals, they point out. Additionally, state services should become more service-oriented. Among the initial signatories are other former ministers as well as the ex-president of the Federal Constitutional Court, Andreas Voßkuhle.

Re:form aims to provide impetus for coalition talks. Deregulation, transparency and accountability should to be a joint project of politics, administration, and civil society, with laws developed to be both practical and data-based. The signatories demand better management of state expenditures and emphasize that a capable state must be shaped today, supported by the consensus of centrist parties. State reform is supposed to be be a top priority for the next Chancellor.
