Agreement reached with the Union parties and the Greens: SPD satisfied

(de-news.net) – The SPD expressed satisfaction with the agreement reached with the Union parties and the Greens, which permits an exemption from the debt brake for security expenditures, a credit-financed special fund for infrastructure and climate protection, and minor debt acquisition by federal states. Lars Klingbeil, SPD party and parliamentary group leader, regarded the agreement as a reflection of the democratic center. He emphasized the importance of advancing security, economic performance, and infrastructure simultaneously, thus enhancing local living conditions. He also highlighted the strengthening of the Bundeswehr as a significant signal.

SPD General Secretary Matthias Miersch described the agreement as a historic step, marking a strong commitment to the nation’s future. He praised the allocation of 500 billion euros for infrastructure and climate protection, which would modernize energy networks, heating infrastructure, and climate-friendly mobility. For the first time, the goal of climate neutrality by 2045 was enshrined in the constitution, a move Miersch deemed transformative for the country’s sustainability.

The agreement also included the transfer of 100 billion euros to the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF) to support the climate-friendly economic transition. The KTF, previously used for renewable energy surcharges, building subsidies, hydrogen development, and e-mobility, would now focus on achieving climate neutrality. The exemption from the debt brake for security expenditures, exceeding 1 percent of GDP, would extend beyond the Bundeswehr to intelligence services, civil protection, and Ukraine support. The 500-billion-euro fund would be utilized over 12 years, with 10 percent of the federal budget allocated to infrastructure investments.
