Nomination of Julia Klöckner (CDU) as President of the Bundestag

(de-news.net) – The parliamentary group of the CDU and CSU in the German Bundestag has unanimously agreed to nominate the former Federal Minister, Julia Klöckner (CDU), as President of the Bundestag, as confirmed by CDU Chairman Friedrich Merz. The decision was taken unanimously. The 52-year-old hails from Rhineland-Palatinate. Since 2010, she has been a member of the CDU Presidium and currently serves as the party’s treasurer as well as the economic policy spokesperson for the Union’s parliamentary group in the Bundestag. From 2018 to 2021, she held the position of Minister of Agriculture.

Merz anticipates that other parliamentary groups will endorse the Union’s proposal, as is customary when the 21st Bundestag convenes. Klöckner emphasized that it is “clear that a President of the Bundestag must represent the entire Bundestag.” She expressed her intention to foster a parliamentary culture of debate characterized by respect and dignity, serving as a model for society at large. In addition to debates and the exchange of arguments, the Bundestag is ultimately the appropriate forum for solutions, she added. Klöckner plans to review the rules of procedure to identify “what can be optimized,” potentially including a question-and-answer mechanism.

Traditionally, the largest parliamentary group in the Bundestag occupies the office of the President of the Bundestag; in the 21st Bundestag, this role falls to the Union parties. Following the vote during the inaugural session of the new Bundestag, Klöckner is set to succeed the current President of the Bundestag, Bärbel Bas (SPD).
