(de-news.net) – Hans-Eckhard Sommer, President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, has expressed critical views on German migration policy during a lecture at an event organized by the CDU-affiliated Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Speaking in a personal capacity, he emphasized the necessity of a radical shift to achieve sustainable migration management and limitation. Sommer presented his personal assessment and summarized his experiences, arguing against the maintenance of individual asylum rights and skepticism towards the positive effects of the Common European Asylum System reforms.
He proposed replacing the current system with substantial humanitarian admissions, considering both humanitarian aspects and labor market integration capacity. Unauthorized entrants to Germany, under his model, would no longer have prospects for residency. Sommer advocated for breaking away from outdated paradigms, noting shifts in European majority dynamics and suggested that even international agreements like the Geneva Refugee Convention could be amended. Highlighting the rise of populist and far-right parties in Europe, he warned of potential threats to the democratic rule of law.
What is more, Sommer criticized the current European system for attracting predominantly young men from the middle class while excluding women, the sick, and families. He dismissed border protection demands as ineffective and deemed the outsourcing of asylum procedures to third countries, proposed by some politicians, as unrealistic.
Ralf Stegner, a Member of the Bundestag for the Social Democratic Party (SPD), strongly condemned the remarks made by Sommer, proposing administrative repercussions.
