Pistorius: volunteer model of service in the Bundeswehr

(de-news.net) – Acting Federal Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius (SPD), has expressed confidence that the reform of military service could be swiftly implemented when the new federal government is in office. Initial steps would involve the resumption of military registration and monitoring. Pistorius emphasized that the new regulations would be modeled after Sweden’s approach, where men aged 18 and above are required to complete a questionnaire, while participation for women remains voluntary.

Suitable candidates would then be contacted by the Bundeswehr to inquire about their willingness to undertake basic military service. Pistorius anticipated that this method would attract sufficient volunteers, thereby negating the need for universal conscription. He suggested that, once the legislative process is completed, the first conscripts could be enrolled and trained. It could potentially be enacted within the current year.

The prospective coalition partners, including CDU, CSU, and SPD, reached a consensus that military service should initially remain voluntary. Pistorius expressed optimism regarding the ability to meet the Bundeswehr’s personnel requirements through voluntary participation. He noted that discussions on mandatory elements would only be necessary if volunteer numbers proved insufficient.

Pistorius acknowledged uncertainty regarding his continuation as Minister of Defense within the new government. He stated that the SPD’s personnel decisions would be announced following the party’s vote on the coalition agreement. However, he hinted at the likelihood of retaining his position.

Meanwhile, Eva Högl, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, advocated for the introduction of a mandatory social year for both men and women. She argued that all citizens should contribute to society for a certain period, emphasizing the societal benefits of such an initiative.
