(de-news.net) – Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has announced stricter border controls and authorized the rejection of asylum seekers at Germany’s borders, overturning a 2015 directive that had prevented such measures. His objective is to reduce illegal migration through enhanced clarity, consistency, and control. To support this policy, Dobrindt plans to increase the presence of federal police at border checkpoints. Reports indicate that the number of federal riot police units will be doubled and supplemented by mobile surveillance and control teams. Border service stations have been directed to adjust their operational plans accordingly.
The rejection of asylum seekers remains legally contentious, as the coalition agreement stipulates that such actions should be coordinated with neighboring countries. Critics argue that Dobrindt’s approach violates the human right to seek asylum and bypasses diplomatic consensus. However, as Dobrindt pointed out, exceptions to the border rejections will be made for vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women.
Recent statistics show a decline in asylum applications in Germany. The first quarter of the year recorded 36,000 new applications, a significant decrease of 30,000 compared to the same period in the previous year.
