BfV suspends measures linked to AfD reclassification

(de-news.net) – In response to the legal challenge by the AfD regarding its classification as “confirmed right-wing extremist,” the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) has issued a temporary suspension of related measures. This entails that the procedural consequences associated with the classification will not be implemented, for the time being.

AfD leader Alice Weidel characterized the temporary suspension as a victory for her party and German democracy. She affirmed the AfD’s intention to continue pursuing legal avenues against the agency’s classification. She reiterated the party’s commitment to contesting what she considers an unjust characterization and expressed confidence in achieving a favorable outcome.

The BfV previously granted a similar suspension in 2021 when the AfD challenged its classification as a “suspected case.” However, the AfD’s efforts were unsuccessful in two judicial instances, although the ruling from one instance, the Higher Administrative Court of Münster, remains non-final.

In the expedited proceedings, the BfV has now agreed to refrain from publicly labeling the AfD as a confirmed right-wing extremist and has removed the corresponding press release from its website. However, officials clarified that this does not mean the agency is reversing its assessment. The classification was based on a prolonged review, concluding that the party exhibits an extremist orientation that undermines human dignity. Until recently, the AfD had only been designated as a “suspected case.”
