Bas comments on candidacy for SPD co-chair, Klüssendorf calls for reflection

(de-news.net) – Federal Minister of Labor Bärbel Bas has announced her candidacy for the position of co-chair of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), supported by the party’s leadership and executive committee. Current co-chair Jens Klingbeil has declared his intention to run again, aiming to form a dual leadership with Bas. Tim Klüssendorf, a left-wing member of the party, is expected to assume the role of secretary-general.

Bas acknowledged that the decision to pursue the leadership role was not taken lightly, emphasizing that the SPD faces a historic challenge. She underscored her commitment to promoting a modern and diverse society and expressed her determination to restructure the party following its electoral defeat in February. Bas highlighted her dedication to social justice, equitable access to education, and fostering diversity, citing her personal background as a person who advanced through the educational system despite initial challenges.

Klüssendorf, in turn, addressed the significant challenges confronting the SPD, asserting that there is much to be reconsidered—especially in light of the party’s historically poor performance in the federal election. He pointed out that substantive programmatic developments remain essential, emphasizing the need to balance coalition governance with the sharpening of the party’s ideological profile. Klüssendorf advocated for the SPD to assert itself through its proper strengths, calling attention to future policy positioning, the defense of democratic values, and resistance against populism and extremism.

The Social Democratic Party plans to elect its new leadership during a delegates’ convention scheduled for the following month. SPD co-chair Saskia Esken had recently announced that she would not seek re-election, stating in a televised interview that she aims to make room for the party’s renewal.
