An intensification of deportations to Greece to be expected

(de-news.net) – The German government plans to intensify deportations of refugees to Greece, a practice largely suspended in recent years due to concerns about human rights conditions. According to a media report citing a communication from the Federal Ministry of the Interior to state governments from early May, the new policy affects refugees already registered in Greece as asylum seekers. It also entails reductions or the withdrawal of benefits for individuals who refuse to leave Germany.

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is hence expected to resume deportations to Greece, with priority given to young, healthy, single men deemed fit for work. Vulnerable groups, such as families, women, children, and individuals with health conditions or advanced age, are to be exempted.

The policy shift follows an April 16 ruling by the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig, which determined that non-vulnerable migrants returning to Greece would not face degrading or inhumane living conditions. The court dismissed the asylum claims of two persons. This precedent establishes grounds for broader rejections of similar asylum applications.

Meanwhile, the German Federal Police has not observed an increase in resistance from incoming migrants or asylum seekers since border controls were expanded. Reports indicate that resistance incidents remain minimal. Surveillance at green borders has been intensified, with more patrols deployed to enhance monitoring between official border checkpoints.
