(de-news.net) – In 2024, approximately 21.2 million individuals in Germany had a migration background, representing an increase of around four percent compared to the previous year. Their proportion of the total population rose to 25.6 percent, according to the Federal Statistical Office. Since 2015, the primary motivations for migration have been displacement (31%), employment (23%), and family reunification (21%). Men predominantly cited displacement and work as reasons for migration, whereas women additionally emphasized familial factors.
The majority of migrants belonged to the first generation (2024: 16.1 million), while 5.2 million individuals were born in Germany as direct descendants of immigrants. Persons with only one immigrant parent (4.1 million) are not classified as part of this group. Two-thirds of the population did not have a migration background.
The demographic with a migration background is significantly younger than the general population, with a median age of 38.2 years, compared to 47.4 years among individuals without such a background. Particularly young age profiles were observed among individuals with only one immigrant parent.
