(de-news.net) – The implementation of the new digital national identity card is expected to be completed no later than early 2027, Federal Minister for Digital Affairs Karsten Wildberger announced during a conference convened in Heilbronn. The CDU politician expressed strong support for the advancements achieved in the development of the smartphone application – the so-called ‘digital wallet.’ Wildberger underscored the transformative potential of this digitalization initiative, emphasizing its capacity to significantly enhance efficiency and streamline various administrative processes for citizens.

The forthcoming virtual identity card will facilitate online identity verification, enable digital document signing, and support remote bank account creation. Beyond the so-called e-ID, the digital wallet is anticipated to serve as a repository for other essential documents, including driver’s licenses, health insurance cards, academic credentials, and vaccination records. Participation in the digital identity system remains entirely voluntary.
