Head of Federal Police shares positive balance of border controls

(de-news.net) – The President of the Federal Police, Dieter Romann, has provided a favorable evaluation of the reinforced border control measures implemented across Germany’s land borders. According to media reports, approximately 14,000 federal police officers are currently stationed at the borders. Over the past three weeks alone, authorities have documented nearly 3,400 unauthorized entry attempts and prevented approximately 2,600 individuals from entering the country. Since September of the preceding year, more than 37,000 attempts to enter Germany illegally have been recorded, with close to 25,000 individuals being denied entry. Additionally, law enforcement efforts have resulted in the apprehension of 991 individuals on charges of human trafficking, alongside the execution of 6,167 outstanding arrest warrants. Romann emphasized that these border operations have been continuously in effect for over 250 days.

The head of the Federal Police further dismissed assertions by the police union regarding excessive workload, arguing that the current force — comprising 56,000 officers — is more than adequate to manage responsibilities that previously necessitated only 10,000 personnel. He also refuted claims that officers had been reassigned from other duties, such as performing railway station security, to reinforce border control efforts. Official reports indicate that the Federal Police consistently maintain a deployment of approximately 9,800 officers at border stations, supplemented by an additional 1,200 personnel following the reinstatement of temporary internal border checks on 16 September 2024. Current estimates suggest that the total number of officers stationed at the borders ranges from 13,000 to 14,000, without diminishing staffing levels in other operational areas.

Moreover, Romann conveyed that criticisms from neighboring states concerning Germany’s border control measures had not manifested at the operational level. He noted that he has engaged in ongoing communication with his foreign counterparts, who have largely expressed understanding regarding the necessity of these actions.
