Alabali-Radovan speaks out for a strong German development policy

(de-news.net) – At the Hamburg Sustainability Conference (HSC) 2025, Federal Development Minister Alabali-Radovan underscored the critical risks associated with the erosion of international cooperation. In her opening remarks, she observed that the efficacy and value of multilateral initiatives were increasingly subject to scrutiny, with many longstanding diplomatic and institutional frameworks currently rendered ineffective. She emphasized the alarming resurgence of diseases previously believed to be eradicated, the escalating prevalence of famine, and the diminishing accessibility of educational opportunities—developments that underscore the far-reaching consequences of weakened global collaboration.

The minister further asserted that neither Germany nor the European Union possessed the capacity to compensate for the disengagement of other major actors, including the United States. Consequently, she stressed the heightened urgency of proactive measures to mitigate the most severe outcomes. Within this context, she reaffirmed the necessity of a strategically guided German development policy, designed to reinforce global stability and sustainability.

Alabali-Radovan also underscored the inextricable link between international cooperation and both global security and economic prosperity. She noted that while enduring peace is contingent upon robust international partnerships, Germany’s economic success remains fundamentally dependent on its export-driven model. Given these considerations, continued engagement in areas such as food security, pandemic response, and conflict resolution remains indispensable. Ultimately, she argued, a strong commitment to development cooperation not only serves humanitarian objectives but also aligns with Germany’s strategic national interests.

The two-day HSC, attended by approximately 1,600 participants from over 100 countries, convenes representatives from the political sphere, business sector, and civil society to address critical challenges, with a particular emphasis on poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
