(de-news.net) – Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has advocated for equipping the Federal Police with electroshock devices, commonly referred to as tasers, emphasizing their necessity as a law enforcement tool. He underscored their strategic significance in policing operations and affirmed his commitment to ensuring that both the requisite funding and legal provisions for their deployment are established within the current year already.
Tasers, Dobrindt contended, effectively bridge the operational gap between close-combat instruments, such as batons, and more distanced weaponry, thereby constituting a viable response to the increasing security threats faced by police officers in public spaces. He specifically highlighted the utility of tasers in countering assaults involving bladed weapons, asserting that their application enhances the efficacy of threat neutralization while concurrently bolstering officer safety.
Dobrindt further noted that multiple German federal states – including Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate – have already integrated tasers into both specialized police units and routine patrol forces. In drawing comparisons to the United States, where the use of tasers has been firmly entrenched in law enforcement practices, he pointed to their long-standing role in operational protocols. Additionally, he referenced an ongoing scientific study in North Rhine-Westphalia that is presently evaluating the implications of taser deployment within police operations.
