Stuttgart 21: circulations from subterranean railway station to begin in a phased manner

(de-news.net) – The subterranean railway station in Stuttgart, the capital of Baden-Württemberg, is scheduled to be inaugurated in a phased manner from December 2026. This announcement was made by Deutsche Bahn following a meeting of the steering committee overseeing the Stuttgart 21 project. According to Deutsche Bahn, the new underground station will be utilized by long-distance trains as well as a portion of regional rail services. Concurrently, the existing above-ground terminal station will remain operational for regional trains until July 2027.

The phased commissioning is justified by the railway operator on the grounds of ongoing construction works required to connect the new subterranean facility to the existing railway network. The necessary closures are to be staggered deliberately, with the aim of minimizing potential disruptions for passengers. Previously, it had been envisaged that the underground station become fully operational in December 2026, coinciding with the complete decommissioning of the former terminal station.
