(de-news.net) — Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has confirmed that temporary border controls at all German national frontiers will remain in effect beyond September. The minister stated that inspections and rejections at the borders would persist, and further deportations are planned. These measures follow the implementation of stricter regulatory policies shortly after Dobrindt assumed office in May.
Herbert Reul (CDU), Interior Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, expressed his support for Dobrindt’s decision, describing it as a necessary political signal. Reul emphasized that the legislation underscores the importance of shared responsibility among neighboring states and reflects Germany’s capacity constraints. He asserted that the measures should be interpreted as a demonstration of effective governance rather than as an expression of distrust, and called for enhanced cooperation within the European Union to address long-term migration challenges.
Conversely, Lars Castellucci (SPD), the Federal Government’s Commissioner for Human Rights, cautioned against the institutionalization of national border controls within the European Union. While acknowledging the importance of monitoring entry points, Castellucci warned that such actions risk undermining human rights and collective European solutions. He advocated for improved conditions in countries of origin and transit, arguing that restrictive policies tarnish Germany’s reputation for international collaboration on migration. According to Castellucci, these controls offer only temporary relief and fail to address the root causes of migration.
