Berlin counters calls for regional division of power pricing

(de-news.net) – According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, the German government intends to uphold the unified electricity price zone. A spokesperson for the Ministry affirmed that this policy is endorsed by the coalition agreement between the CDU/CSU and SPD, which underscores its overall advantages and acknowledges ongoing progress in grid expansion.

Within Germany’s bidding zone, electricity is uniformly priced, typically based on low-cost wind energy generated in the northern regions. In response to persistent transmission constraints and elevated costs, several premiers of northern federal states have consistently advocated for a division of the price zone. Due to limited transmission capacity, wind-generated electricity from the north cannot always be efficiently delivered to the south, necessitating the activation of expensive reserve power plants.
