Germany’s honey harvest up amid spring bloom

(de-news.net) – Germany’s honey harvest has improved notably this year, with beekeepers in several regions reporting higher yields. In Saarland, colonies produced up to 35 kilograms of honey, well above the usual 20 kilograms. The increase was linked to the strong bloom of fruit trees, which offered abundant nectar. Beekeepers in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse also reported above-average results, suggesting favorable conditions this past season.

Meanwhile, conservationists have voiced concerns about the rise in private beekeeping. NABU noted that amateur beekeeping has grown significantly over two decades and cautioned that many people wrongly associate it with conservation. Although honeybees support pollination, the group warned they might compete with wild bees. NABU advised that those keeping bees should also enhance local floral diversity to reduce pressure on native pollinators. The German Beekeepers’ Association, however, argued that nature has mechanisms to prevent serious competition for food sources.
