(de-news.net) – Following the freeze of citizens’ money (Bürgergeld) rates in 2025, the German government intends to maintain these levels in 2026. According to media reports, a regulation proposed by Federal Labour Minister Bärbel Bas (SPD) is expected to be ratified by the Federal Cabinet on 10 September. This measure will ensure that the monthly allowance for single recipients remains at 563 euros. Child benefits, which vary between 357 and 471 euros depending on the age of the child, will likewise remain unchanged. This marks the second consecutive year without an increase, following substantial adjustments in 2023 and 2024 that accounted for inflation.
Bas also announced the introduction of more stringent sanctions for Bürgergeld recipients. Individuals who fail to attend scheduled appointments without valid justification will face a reduction in benefits of 30 percent, an increase from the previous rate of 10 percent. Repeated refusal to accept employment offers may result in the complete withdrawal of financial support. The Minister emphasized that assistance is contingent upon active participation in reintegration measures, highlighting the necessity for enhanced accountability.
The CDU/CSU and SPD have committed to implementing comprehensive reforms across Germany’s social security and healthcare systems, including pension schemes. Chancellor Merz underscored the urgency of these reforms, stating that the current structure is no longer financially viable.
