Specifically, 72% indicated a preference for autonomous commuter trains or subways, 70% for driverless buses, and 68% for small or shuttle buses. Autonomous private vehicles and taxis were favored by 57% and 56% of participants, respectively, while regional or long-distance autonomous trains garnered support from 44%. In contrast, autonomous ships (34%) and aircraft (27%) received comparatively lower acceptance.

Public opinion remains divided regarding the long-term viability of autonomous driving technologies. While 53% anticipate that such systems will become standard practice, 43% regard them as a transient trend lacking substantive longevity. Nonetheless, a substantial majority—86%—view digitalization as a pivotal opportunity for advancing mobility. In alignment with this perspective, 78% of respondents affirmed that Germany’s automotive industry must embrace digital innovation to sustain global competitiveness, and 77% underscored the strategic importance of partnerships with technology firms. Concurrently, 50% advocated for a renewed focus on the sector’s traditional values.
