Germany’s nationwide transit pass to rise in price – long-term funding secured

(de-news.net) – At a special session convened in Munich, Germany’s state transport ministers resolved to increase the monthly price of the Deutschlandticket from 58 to 63 euros, effective from the beginning of the coming year. The measure remains subject to final approval by the Bundesrat. According to information from Bavarian authorities, both federal and state governments intend to maintain their annual contributions of 1.5 billion euros each, thereby ensuring the ticket’s financial viability for the next five years.

Introduced in 2023 at an initial price of 49 euros, the Deutschlandticket was conceived as a nationwide public transport pass. From 2027 onward, pricing is to be determined by a newly established cost index, expected to incorporate variables such as wage developments and energy costs. This mechanism is designed to enhance transparency and provide greater predictability for both passengers and transport operators.

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) confirmed the conclusion of an agreement with the Ministry of Finance to secure annual funding through 2030. He acknowledged the fiscal challenges posed by the current budgetary environment and emphasized that regions with limited public transport infrastructure would be taken into account — citing the recent increase in commuter tax relief as a compensatory measure.

Criticism was voiced by representatives from Baden-Württemberg. They noted that the federal government had failed to cover existing funding gaps, contrary to prior coalition agreements. As a consequence, the financial burden would shift further onto passengers. Nonetheless, the revised ticket price was still considered a highly competitive offering.
