(de-news.net) – Germany is planning to implement a centralized electronic vehicle registration system within the next eighteen months, as announced by Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU). While the technical infrastructure required for such a system could be established relatively swiftly, Wildberger emphasized that the more formidable challenge lies in adapting the existing administrative frameworks. In particular, the procedural structures of vehicle registration offices and the Flensburg authority require substantial modification.

The said adjustments are not merely technical in nature; they involve complex, human-centered processes that necessitate institutional restructuring and the reconfiguration of long-standing workflows. Despite these challenges, the Ministry remains committed to completing the transformation within the projected timeframe.

In parallel with electronic vehicle registrations, the government also intends to launch a comprehensive digital wallet system, envisioned as a secure platform for storing and managing essential personal documents – including identity cards, driver’s licenses, vehicle registration certificates, and insurance documentation. The Ministry is actively advancing both the technological development and the regulatory framework necessary to ensure that these documents meet stringent security standards.

Although the projects being inherently complex, Wildberger emphasized that considerable progress has already been achieved. He underscored the importance of moving beyond abstract policy declarations and delivering tangible, operational digital services that meet the expectations of the public.
