Klöckner for more reasonable prices for meat products

Federal Minister of Agriculture Julia Klöckner (CDU) has strongly advocated that those responsible in the meat industry should remedy possible maladministration in production. After an industry meeting in Düsseldorf with animal owners, meat processing companies, the meat trade, animal and consumer protection groups, Klöckner said there was no second chance. The existing system is not crisis-proof at all, she emphasized.

The minister now wants to examine in how far a tightening of the law with regard to prices and special offers can be brought about. Klöckner would also like to speak to party leaders and parliamentary group leaders in the Bundestag about animal welfare.

An animal welfare tax could be added to consumer prices. Once again, Klöckner campaigned for the industry to voluntarily introduce an animal welfare logo for meat to guarantee appropriate, better husbandry.
