Altmaier wants to abolish the EEG surcharge to achieve cheaper electricity

(GermanPolicy.com) – Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) would like to significantly reduce the EEG surcharge by up to a third by January 1, 2022 and completely abolish it in the coming three years. The levy according to the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) is part of the electricity price. Altmaier justified the announced reduction with the fact that renewable energies are financed more and more via the electricity market. Electricity must remain affordable, according to Altmaier. State subsidies for renewable energies are to be fed from the income from CO2 pricing.
