State elections in Saxony and Thuringia: CDU and AfD in the lead

(de-news.net) – The populations in the Free State of Saxony and in the Federal State of Thuringia have voted. According to the preliminary final result, the CDU has become the strongest force in Saxony. The AfD is in second place. After counting all constituencies, the CDU received 31.9 percent of the votes, the AfD received 30.6 percent, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) 11.8 percent, the SPD 7.3 percent and the Greens 5.1 percent. Thanks to two direct mandates, the Left Party achieved parliamentary group strength despite only reaching 4.5 percent. The Free Voters received one seat with one direct mandate and a mathematical result of 4.8 percent. Voter turnout in Saxony was 74.4 percent.

In Thuringia, the AfD became the strongest party with 32.8 percent, the CDU achieved 23.6 percent, the BSW – which, like in Saxony, was running in Thuringia for the first time – 15.8 percent, the Left Party 13.1 percent and the SPD 6.1 percent. The Greens and the FDP failed to enter State Parliament. The CDU would have the opportunity to lead a three-party coalition with the BSW and the Left Party, but so far the CDU has decided not to work with the Left party. There is no majority in Thuringia with the participation of the SPD.
