(de-news.net) – The German Association of Cities and Municipalities has urged democratic parties to form a new government swiftly following the federal election. The Chief Executive of the association, André Berghegger, emphasized the urgent need for a stable and capable government amid significant domestic and foreign policy challenges. He urged parties to cooperate constructively for the country’s benefit, avoiding prolonged exploratory and coalition negotiations.
Berghegger highlighted the unprecedented challenges faced by municipalities, noting that their financial deficit had grown to 25 billion euros by the end of the third quarter of 2024. Additionally, the investment backlog had surged to 186 billion euros. Both businesses and citizens rely on functional municipalities, and it is imperative that parties reach an agreement on key issues and establish reliable conditions swiftly. This necessity is further underscored by foreign policy developments. Berghegger insisted that Europe must continue to rely on Germany as its leading economic power.
