(de-news.net) – In the Hamburg state election, the SPD emerged as the strongest party despite losses, securing the ability to continue governing. The SPD, led by First Mayor Peter Tschentscher, now has two coalition options: with the Green Party and with the CDU.
According to preliminary official results, the SPD received 33.5% of the vote, a decrease of 5.7 percentage points. The Greens also lost 5.7 points, obtaining 18.5%, making a continuation of the red-green coalition possible. The CDU gained significantly, with an increase of 8.6 points, reaching 19.8% of the vote. The Left Party received 11.2%, and the AfD 7.5%. The FDP and BSW failed to surpass the 5% threshold, with 2.3% and 1.8%, respectively.
Tschentscher stated that continuing the red-green coalition is his “first option,” as it enjoys substantial support in Hamburg. However, he also mentioned discussions with the CDU, emphasizing the importance of dialogue between democratic parties. He expressed optimism about the possibility of a two-party government.
The Greens, despite significant losses, were relieved and optimistic about continuing the coalition with the SPD in Hamburg. However, CDU candidate Dennis Thering advocated for a coalition with the SPD, citing a voter mandate for change, particularly in security and transportation policies, with the CDU proposing “pragmatic” politics. The Left Party’s lead candidate Cansu Özdemir described her party’s result as “magnificent,” lauding the fact that her faction will grow, while Hamburg AfD Chairman Dirk Nockemann expressed satisfaction.
Approximately 1.3 million people aged 16 and above were eligible to vote. Voter turnout was nearly 68 percent, higher than the previous election.
