Municipal associations criticize migration policies

(de-news.net) – Municipal associations have expressed strong criticism of migration policies, urging comprehensive reforms from the new government made up of CDU/CSU and SPD. Achim Brötel, President of the County Association, warned that ignoring evident issues risks fueling anti-democratic and radical parties. He emphasized the need for migration policies to balance humanitarian principles with elements of order, regulation, and limitation. Brötel supported the Union parties’ call for border rejections of asylum seekers and advocated for reducing benefits for those obligated to leave.

André Berghegger, CEO of the Association of Cities and Municipalities, highlighted the strain on German municipalities in accommodating and integrating refugees, noting that despite some improvements, the situation remains tense. He stressed the importance of accelerating labor market integration for foreigners, suggesting that qualifications should be assessed upon arrival. Berghegger also called for increased federal funding to support integration efforts, particularly for language and integration courses.
