Prominent SPD politicians call on members to support coalition agreement

(de-news.net) – SPD leader Lars Klingbeil as well as a prominent member of the Bundestag, Ralf Stegner, and Dirk Wiese, of the SPD’s Seeheimer Kreis, have advocated for party members to approve the coalition agreement with the CDU/CSU. Klingbeil emphasized the critical global crises. He highlighted the necessity of forming a stable government and underscored the party’s responsibility in addressing these challenges. Klingbeil also cited positive feedback from unions and works councils regarding negotiation outcomes, including infrastructure investments, potential minimum wage increases, and stable pensions.

A left-leaning SPD politician, Stegner expressed understanding for the SPD youth organization’s (Jusos’) opposition but argued for approval of the agreement, warning of potential political consequences – such as right-wing influence or rapid elections favoring the AfD. He praised the negotiation results, particularly in areas like labor, pensions, and housing, and noted minimal concessions to the Union.

Dirk Wiese, representing the SPD’s conservative Seeheimer Kreis, described the agreement as a well-negotiated compromise reflecting numerous SPD demands despite electoral setbacks. He emphasized progress in infrastructure, digitalization, and social cohesion, urging members to view the agreement as a forward-looking compromise.

The CDU criticized resistance surfacing within the SPD, warning of a potential state crisis if the agreement is rejected. CDU representatives defended stricter migration policies outlined in the agreement, stressing their necessity to address societal challenges. Meanwhile, the Jusos opposed the agreement, citing concerns in areas such as asylum, migration, labor, and social policies.

The SPD has initiated a two-week member consultation on the coalition document, concluding on April 29. The CSU had already approved the agreement, while the CDU planned a formal party meeting on April 28, with Friedrich Merz expected to be elected Chancellor on May 6.
