(de-news.net) – Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) has announced a legislative initiative to suspend family reunification for individuals under subsidiary protection for a two-year period. The proposal, intended for cabinet discussion this week, seeks to signal a shift in Germany’s migration policy. Presently, up to 1,000 relatives per month may join such beneficiaries. This practice would cease under the proposed law.
Dobrindt anticipates support in the Bundesrat, referencing existing coalition agreements, and aims for implementation prior to the summer parliamentary recess. The minister also signaled potential further measures following the suspension period, contingent upon trends in irregular migration. He emphasized that the legislation forms a key element in efforts to curb unauthorized entries.
Additionally, Dobrindt plans to abolish the so-called “turbo naturalization” process, which allows for German citizenship after three years in certain cases. He criticized the measure as flawed and confirmed efforts toward its repeal are underway.
