Asylum requests fall over 50% amid ongoing border checks

(de-news.net) – Germany’s continued implementation of systematic border inspections has been reaffirmed by Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), who characterized recent adjustments to refugee policy as demonstrably effective. According to Dobrindt, current border control measures are operational and will remain in place, citing a marked decrease in asylum applications as supporting evidence.

Between January and July, initial asylum claims declined significantly – by more than 50% year-over-year – from approximately 140,800 to 70,000. In July alone, 8,293 applications were submitted, reflecting a 55% drop relative to July 2024 and a 65% reduction compared to July 2023, though representing an increase from the 6,860 cases reported in June. The temporary border measures are scheduled to remain active until 15 September, with any extension requiring formal notification to the European Union in August.

Dobrindt also emphasized the government’s commitment to disrupting organized networks engaged in human smuggling, asserting the primacy of state sovereignty in determining lawful entry into Germany over the influence of criminal enterprises.
