Rhineland-Palatinate: State Media Act revision to strengthen media competence

(de-news.net) – The German state of Rhineland-Palatinate plans to boost public education and awareness about media’s role and impact. Daniel Schäffner, media policy spokesperson for the SPD, stated that a proposed amendment to the State Media Act aims to improve media literacy across the region.

Minister-President Alexander Schweitzer stressed the need to align media literacy with youth media protection. A legislative draft has been submitted by the governing coalition—SPD, Greens, FDP—alongside the CDU opposition. The revised law is set to take effect on 1 January 2026, with its first reading in parliament on Wednesday.

The State Media Authority, which regulates private radio, TV, and internet services, will oversee implementation. The goal is to help individuals engage with media critically, creatively, and independently.
