Call for required economics course as CDU seeks stronger economic literacy in schools

(de-news.net) – To strengthen the nation’s broader entrepreneurial environment, the Christian Democratic Union has advocated for the introduction of a mandatory economics course in German schools. According to media reports, CDU lawmaker Christoph Ploß — who also serves as the Ministry of Economics’ maritime coordinator — asserted that a substantial enhancement of economic education was indispensable, arguing that Germany’s long‑term competitiveness would, to a considerable degree, be determined by what students learn during their formative years in the classroom. He maintained that a dedicated and systematically structured economics course would equip students with the analytical competencies required to grasp the complex relationships among economic performance, individual and collective wealth, and the functioning principles of the social market economy.

Ploß further emphasized that individuals who receive early instruction on how businesses are founded, how employment opportunities are created and sustained, and how the state secures its financial resources are statistically more inclined to make prudent and socially responsible decisions later in life. He stated that achieving such outcomes would require a comprehensive and carefully coordinated reform of school curricula across all German educational institutions. Only after these reforms are implemented, he argued, will a greater number of young people regard entrepreneurship not merely as an abstract concept but as a realistic and appealing professional path.
