(de-news.net) – Left Party leader Luigi Pantisano apologized for describing CDU policies as “fascist,” acknowledging that the characterization was inaccurate while maintaining his broader criticism of the CDU’s political direction. The CDU rejected the apology, with leading conservative politicians condemning the remarks, calling for Pantisano’s resignation, and arguing that the comparison trivialized fascism. The controversy also generated unease within the Left Party.
Pantisano, the co-chair of the New Left Party, has expressed regret for describing the CDU’s actions as “fascist,” acknowledging that the characterization was both inaccurate and excessively reductive. In explaining his retraction, he argued that a clear distinction must be maintained between political opponents operating within the democratic spectrum and those whose objective is the dismantling of democratic institutions. Pantisano emphasized that blurring this distinction was inappropriate and therefore apologized for his remarks. He directed particular regret toward CDU members who have repeatedly advocated maintaining a firm political firewall against the AfD, indicating that his comments had failed to adequately recognize those efforts.
At the same time, Pantisano stressed that the apology did not alter his broader political assessment of the CDU. He maintained his criticism of what he perceives as the party’s continued movement toward the political right and argued that his underlying concerns remained unchanged despite withdrawing the specific wording of his earlier statement. He also reiterated his apprehension regarding the possibility of closer political cooperation or alignment between the CDU and the AfD in the future. According to Pantisano, the prospect of such a development remains a significant source of concern and continues to shape his criticism of current political trends.
Nevertheless, the CDU rejected his attempt at clarification and apology. CDU Secretary-General Carsten Linnemann maintained that Pantisano’s original remarks had been sufficiently clear and unambiguous and argued that the subsequent explanation represented an effort to avoid accountability for what had been said. In Linnemann’s view, describing the original statement as merely abbreviated or insufficiently nuanced was itself unacceptable. He further called on the Left Party as a whole to distance itself from the comments and to make clear that such comparisons did not reflect its official position.
Conservatives condemn remarks
Criticism also came from other prominent figures within the conservative political camp. Schleswig-Holstein Minister-President Daniel Günther and CSU Secretary-General Martin Huber both expressed strong disapproval of Pantisano’s remarks and called for his resignation. Günther argued that comparing the CDU either to fascists or to the AfD placed an individual outside the bounds of serious democratic discourse and demonstrated a failure to engage responsibly with historical realities. Such comparisons, he suggested, undermined the possibility of constructive political debate and reflected an inadequate appreciation of the historical significance of fascism. On that basis, Günther maintained that Pantisano could no longer serve as a credible representative or interlocutor for democratic political actors and therefore ought to withdraw from political life.
Linnemann further contended that the controversy reflected a broader problem within the Left Party itself. Referring to the party’s recent convention, he argued that it had revealed a more general inability to engage with historical memory in a responsible and proportionate manner. According to his assessment, drawing parallels between Christian Democrats and fascists trivialized the crimes, suffering, and historical horrors associated with fascism. He also portrayed Pantisano as a prominent representative of what he characterized as a new radical left current, arguing that the views expressed in the controversy were incompatible with the responsibilities associated with public office and political leadership. Beyond the criticism voiced by political opponents, the episode also generated unease within the Left Party itself, where Pantisano’s remarks and the subsequent backlash prompted irritation and internal concern.
