Germany moves to strengthen drone defenses after airport incident

(de-news.net) – Surveillance footage indicates that an explosives-laden drone struck a cargo plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport but failed to detonate. The incident has prompted heightened government attention, expanded drone-defense research and plans to strengthen Germany’s airport and critical-infrastructure security.

According to surveillance footage, a drone carrying explosives approached a Ukrainian cargo plane parked at Leipzig/Halle Airport last week, suggesting that the aircraft may have narrowly avoided an explosion. The recordings indicate that at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, an object flew directly toward the Antonov aircraft before striking one of its wings. The location of the impact is significant because the wings of such aircraft normally contain fuel tanks, meaning that a successful detonation at that point could have had serious consequences.

The video appears to show the object bouncing off the wing before falling to the ground. That reconstruction is reportedly supported by marks found on the aircraft, which are consistent with the suspected impact. The precise reason the explosive device failed to detonate, however, remains unclear. The device was eventually found some distance from the drone rather than still attached to it. That circumstance has raised the possibility that the device became detached when the drone collided with the aircraft, although the available information does not establish exactly how or when that occurred.

The incident is being reported to Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), who is currently on vacation. Sebastian Hille, a deputy government spokesman, said Monday that Merz was following developments closely and remained in intensive communication with Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) as well as other officials involved in the matter. Hille also confirmed that the National Security Council had discussed the incident Friday under Merz’s leadership, underscoring the attention being given to the episode at the highest levels of government.

Case drives push to strengthen critical-infrastructure security

The government is also responding through measures aimed at strengthening research into drone security. Dobrindt plans to expand such research following the discovery of the explosives-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport. A new research facility is scheduled to be established Aug. 18 at the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) test airport in Cochstedt, Saxony-Anhalt. The planned facility is intended to bring together scientific research, technological development and the practical requirements of security authorities. Its purpose will be to develop and test counter-drone technologies under real-world conditions, reflecting the growing emphasis on technological capabilities for detecting and responding to drone threats.

At the same time, the government is preparing broader measures to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure in response to the thwarted attack, which allegedly involved a drone carrying Semtex. According to media reports, Dobrindt is expected to issue a ministerial directive that would substantially expand the Joint Drone Defense Center, or GDAZ, a specialized unit established only late last year. Under the reported plans, the center’s personnel would increase from roughly 150 to 300 highly specialized personnel, while its operational network would expand from four bases to eight strategic locations across Germany.

Transport Minister Steffen Bilger (CDU) is separately seeking to improve the detection and interception of drones around German airports. He emphasized the importance of reliable early detection by air traffic authorities, pointing to the ability to identify a drone threat in time as a central element of airport security. Frankfurt and Munich airports, he noted, are already better equipped in this area. For other airports, Bilger said, equipment upgrades should be accelerated wherever possible, reflecting the need to strengthen detection capabilities across the broader airport network.
