More infections due to the Corona virus’ delta variant

The delta variant of the Corona virus, which was first localized in India, accounts for 59 percent of current infections, after the proportion was around 37 percent at the very beginning of July, as reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). A third of those currently infected suffer from the alpha variant, which was first localized in the UK. According to EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides, the vaccination campaigns in the EU needs to be accelerated. The mask and distance requirement should be maintained. Children under 12 should also be vaccinated, if possible.

By the end of July, sufficient units of vaccine, to immunize a total of 70 percent of the population in Germany, should be available in the near future. The new variant had increased the virulence, Kyriakides added.
