Joint vote with AfD was an exception, Merz emphasizes

(de-news.net) – The leader of the CDU, Friedrich Merz, has reaffirmed the party’s stance against the far-right AfD following recent joint votes in the Bundestag, describing these as exceptions. At the CDU national convention in Berlin, he emphasized the CDU’s long-standing opposition to the AfD’s principles. Merz firmly stated that there is no cooperation or tolerance with the AfD. He explained that benefiting from AfD votes is a situation is unlikely to recur and emphasized that last week’s vote was due to the absence of a governmental majority in the Bundestag.

Additionally, Merz highlighted the CDU’s focus on safeguarding freedom against external and internal threats. He criticized the governing coalition’s economic policies, accusing them of excessive state intervention and dismissing the reintroduction of a wealth tax. Merz also pledged increased presence in Brussels if the CDU leads the government.
