Lang (Greens) calls on politicians to focus more on social media

(de-news.net) – Ricarda Lang, a politician from the Green Party, has emphasized the necessity for greater political engagement on social media in order to connect with younger voters. She argued that democratic parties often oversimplify by claiming that detailed explanations of complex topics remain ineffective on these platforms. At the same time, she rejected the notion that only right-wing populists could succeed on social media, asserting that concise and impactful content could also be delivered from other perspectives.

Lang, now a Bundestag member, dedicates significantly more time to crafting political content for social media than during her tenure as party leader. Her routine of planning weekly social media strategies includes explaining coalition agreements and preparing clips from talk show appearances. While acknowledging the demands of platforms which ideally require daily posts, she admitted to not always meeting this frequency.

However, she highlighted the potential of positive emotions to resonate with audiences, provided that politicians adopt creative approaches and consider their target groups’ perspectives. Since stepping down as party leader in autumn 2024, Lang has experimented with various formats to expand her reach. For instance, she recently uploaded a video discussing the coalition agreement between the Union parties and the SPD while applying makeup, aiming to make politics more engaging. Lang identified humor, honesty, and defying expectations—such as through her makeup video—as effective strategies for breaking out of the political echo chamber and reaching audiences who might not typically follow political figures.
