Black-red coalition signs agreement, SPD announces cabinet team

(de-news.net) – The leadership of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Christian Social Union (CSU), and Social Democratic Party (SPD) have signed their coalition agreement in Berlin at the Gasometer in Schöneberg. Designated Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized that the administration would act decisively from the outset, advancing Germany’s interests.

CSU leader Markus Söder described the agreement as a source of optimism, stressing that strong governance was crucial for countering democracy’s adversaries. SPD Chairwoman Saskia Esken highlighted the necessity of safeguarding democratic principles daily, stating that eliminating right-wing extremism was the administration’s primary goal.

Before the signing, the SPD announced its ministerial lineup, introducing significant leadership changes. Co-Chair Lars Klingbeil was appointed Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor, while Boris Pistorius retained the Defense Ministry. Bärbel Bas took over the Labor Ministry, and Carsten Schneider became Environment Minister.
